Labeled Line Coding by the Lobster Robot Antenna System
Stéphane Ryder

The Antennal system consists of bilaterally paired antennae operated synchronously by a drive motor to move through 4 positions. The output of the strain gauges are quantized with a microcontroller into one of 7 states that are indicated by the LEDs in the display below.

LED display used to indiate responses of antennae to different perturbations

Self generated oscillations of the antennae between the anterior and lateral positions. Notice that the lowest amplitude LEDs are activated at the mid point of the movement as the velocity is highest. This illustrates the flow monitoring capabilities of the antennae.

antennaeObstruction.gif

Collision with an object during self generated oscillations of the antennae between the anterior and lateral positions. Notice that the next order bit of one antennae is activated throughout the collision.

antennaecollision.gif

Head on collision of the left then right antennae. Notice that the antennae undulates on both directions following each collision. This pattern is activation is only seen during collisions. We have subsequently generates an algorithm that turns on the 8th bit in the antenna byte for one second when such a colission is detected.

antennasurge.gif

Responses of the antennae to lateral surge. Notice that the bits are turned on symmetrically.
